The staff at Wormhole MUD are committed to making the game accessible and enjoyable for visually impaired players. Can you help us? If so, please contact the immortals in-game. We need to understand the needs of blind and partially sighted users, and we also need some guidelines by players for players, to enhance their experience.

We will try to add information here about settings you can select to improve the experience for players using screenreader like Jaws for Windows. Hopefully that will apply to Braille displays as well.

So far we have tried to use Jaws with the Ytin client; it didn't work. Menus and window decorations worked but the output from the MUD did not. What do you use?

There is a guide on how to get mokeyterm to work with JAWS for Windows on http://randylaptop.com/mudding/client.php

Some useful commands:

  • help menu - Shows a Jaws friendly help page with a list of submenues. Don't use 'help' since it contains lots of special characters for formating.
  • toggle brief - Hides the room decription. Room name, players, monsters and items are still shown. You can read the room description in full with the LOOK command, but you won't be spammed with descriptions when walking around areas you already know.
  • toggle gag - Removes the less interesting messages displayed in a fight, such as the ones where you miss.
  • toggle chat - Turns on and off the chat channel.
  • toggle music - Turns on and off the music channel.
  • toggle flame - Turns on and off the flame channel.
  • toggle question - Turns on and off the question channel.
  • Because the ASCII-art map of the Space Station isn't much use when you're using a text-to-speech program, we have created a verbal description of the game's central area, which may help you get your bearings in the earliest stages of the game. You can find it HERE.
