In most universes, there are black holes. Ravenous dead stars with a pull so great that nothing - not even light - can escape. In many of those universes there are legends of travelers who have gone through a black hole, never to be seen again.
Our home is a curious one. We can detect no black holes, but our sky is dominated by a white one. It disgorges the flotsam and jetsam of thousands civilizations. Wrecked spacecraft, drifting hulks that were once imposing space stations, ghost cities... even whole worlds.
We are the people who survived the journey here, to this Sargasso sea of space. We have learned to pick over the wreckage, salvaging foodstuffs, sources of energy... oxygen. We arm ourselves, because there is no law here. The boldest among us may one day acquire the strength to challenge their imprisonment.
As for the rest... we hope to survive a while longer.
